Zimbabwe’s national team has been rocked by controversy just days before their crucial clash against Bafana Bafana, following the sudden resignation of assistant coach Takesure Chiragwi.
Chiragwi stepped down from his position after an incident during a local league match over the weekend, where he was seen slapping his own player, McDonald Makuwe, in a shocking moment that sparked outrage across Zimbabwe’s football community.

The altercation quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread condemnation from fans, players, and officials alike. Facing mounting pressure, Chiragwi issued a public apology, admitting that his actions were unprofessional and expressing remorse for his behavior.
“I sincerely apologize to McDonald Makuwe, my club, and the football community at large. It was an emotional moment, and I deeply regret my reaction,” Chiragwi stated.
Despite the apology, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed that Chiragwi had voluntarily resigned from his national team duties to allow the Warriors’ camp to maintain focus ahead of their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
The development has caused disruption in the Warriors’ preparation, with reports suggesting that the technical team is working to restore stability and concentration within the squad before the high-stakes encounter.
The incident has once again highlighted the issue of discipline and professionalism in African football management, as Zimbabwe now faces the challenge of regrouping quickly amid the controversy
