Despite limited recognition and the absence of sponsorship, Adepoju Demola, a young and determined cyclist from Ibadan, made a remarkable impression at the 4th edition of the Cycling Lagos Championship, held at the National Stadium, Surulere
The prestigious event, one of Nigeria’s top cycling competitions, brought together both amateur and professional riders from across the country. Competing in the professional men’s category, the 22-year-old Demola finished among the top five, a significant achievement for a rising athlete still striving to make his mark in the sport

In a post-race interview, Demola revealed that his greatest challenge has not been training but the lack of financial and institutional support.
“I love cycling deeply, but it’s hard to keep going without sponsorship,” he said. “Sometimes I train with worn-out equipment or pay for my travel to competitions myself. Still, I keep pushing because I believe in my talent.”
Demola’s cycling journey began at age fifteen, inspired by both local riders in Ibadan and Nigerian cycling star Ese Ukpeseraye, who has raised the country’s profile in international competitions.
“She showed us that Nigerian cyclists can compete anywhere in the world,” he noted. “That motivates me every day.”
Training mostly on the rough and hilly roads of Ibadan, Demola starts his sessions before dawn to complete long rides before heading to work. He described the Cycling Lagos route as demanding but rewarding.
“The course was challenging with its sharp turns and flat stretches. It tested everything we trained for,” he said.
For Demola, participating in Cycling Lagos represents more than just competition — it’s a platform for visibility and opportunity.
“Cycling Lagos gives riders like me a chance to prove ourselves,” he emphasized. “With more sponsors and government support, Nigerian cyclists can achieve much more.”
Looking ahead, the Ibadan-born cyclist hopes to compete in the National Cycling Road Championship later this year and eventually represent Nigeria in international events like the UCI Africa Tour.
The Cycling Lagos Championship, supported by the Lagos State Sports Commission and various private partners, continues to promote healthy living, youth empowerment, and sports tourism. Organizers have expressed plans to expand participation and attract more sponsorship in future editions to strengthen Nigeria’s growing cycling community
