Yanga Coach Pedro Gonçalves Confident Of CAF Champions League Progress Despite Tough Group Draw

Dar es Salaam – Young Africans (Yanga) head coach Pedro Gonçalves has expressed full confidence in his team’s ability to reach the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, despite being drawn in what many describe as one of the toughest groups in the competition.

Speaking to Sports247.ng, the Portuguese tactician said the early announcement of the fixtures has allowed Yanga to properly assess their opponents and begin focused preparations.

“I am not afraid of any team. What matters is preparation — that’s what makes the difference,” Gonçalves stated. “We are determined to approach all six matches with discipline and confidence, and I believe that will take us to the quarter-finals.”

Gonçalves, known for his calm approach and tactical sharpness, emphasized that in football, names and reputations mean little compared to strategy, teamwork, and execution.

“There are no great teams in football — only great tactics and experience. That’s what decides matches,” he said.

The coach also praised his players’ commitment and work ethic, noting that the quality within the Yanga squad gives him belief that they can compete against any side on the continent.

Yanga have been placed in Group B alongside African giants Al Ahly of Egypt, JS Kabylie of Algeria, and FAR Rabat of Morocco — a group widely regarded as the “group of death.”

Still, Gonçalves remains optimistic that with proper preparation, Yanga can rise to the challenge and make a strong statement in this year’s competition.

“I have great faith in my players. With the time we have to prepare, I’m confident we’ll perform well and achieve our goals,” he added.

For the reigning Tanzanian champions, the mission is clear — to prove they belong among Africa’s elite once again.
