Sports247 gathered that Coach Purity was particularly impressed with the Nigerian quartet’s haul of four gold medals in the 2026 NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championships, describing it as further confirmation of the country’s global impact.

Christinah Ogunsanya started the haul with victory in the 117 pounds category, following a strong performance that was buoyed by her high technical ability and reservoir of experience en route to winning the title.

Up next was Jumoke Adekoye, who ruled the 131 pounds class, while Esther Kolawole won the 138-pound-category, backed by her immense strength, international experience and technical falls.

Nigeria’s fourth conqueror was renowned medalist, Odunayo Adekuoroye’s sister, Mercy, who clinched the 160-pound title with a smooth tactical approach, skilful displays, physical control and resilience.

In reaction to the achievements, Coach Purity, who doubles as a board member of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), said the achievements reflect the country’s talent and strength on the international stage.

Akuh added, “The success of the four wrestlers highlights the growing impact of international athletes in collegiate wrestling in the United States. It also marked a significant moment for African representation in NAIA wrestling.

“Their victories have not only earned them NAIA All-American recognition but also brought pride to their universities and to Nigerian people, government and the wrestling federation.

“It was made possible through visionary leadership of the federation’s president, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, with an approach that is deliberate and well mapped for investment in talent discovery.”
