The battle for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will make the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) far more competitive than previous editions, according to Super Falcons forward Chinwendu Ihezuo.
The Pachuca Tuzas striker believes every team heading to Morocco will be motivated by the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup, making Nigeria’s quest to defend their continental crown even more challenging.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, scheduled for July 26 to August 16, Ihezuo said the Super Falcons cannot afford to underestimate any opponent despite entering the competition as defending champions.
“This tournament will be tougher, much tougher. Last year, there was no FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket to fight for. When the first whistle goes on July 26, every team will be focused on securing a World Cup ticket,” she said.
“As defending champions, we cannot afford to be over-confident.”
Despite the expected stiff competition, Ihezuo expressed confidence in the quality and unity within the Nigerian squad, insisting the nine-time African champions have what it takes to achieve both objectives in Morocco.
“I believe in the team that we have, the togetherness among us, our hard work, and the courage that keeps us going. We are not only going for a World Cup ticket but also to retain the trophy,” she added.
Ihezuo also delivered encouraging news on her fitness after spending time on the sidelines through injury.
The former Nigeria youth international revealed she has fully recovered and is eager to rejoin the national team after taking part in pre-season preparations with Mexican club Pachuca.
“God has been great and I give Him all the glory. I am now healed and fully recovered. My club is in pre-season, but I am ready to fly to Morocco and team up with the Super Falcons to make Nigeria proud,” Ihezuo said.
The Super Falcons will head to Morocco aiming to win a record-extending 11th WAFCON title while also securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
