Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has expressed optimism as Nigeria prepares for its crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa
Nigeria host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 6, before travelling to the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein to face South Africa three days later.

Ndidi admitted the team has underperformed in previous fixtures but underlined their resolve to turn things around
“I know it’s not easy feeling this way, especially after the past games. We’re in a difficult position now, but as a team we are doing everything we can, we are focused on the one within not far. We will take it one step at a time ” Ndidi
The Super Eagles are fourth in Group C with seven points from six games. With just four matches left, they need to win both to stay in contention.
While many believe South Africa will provide the bigger challenge due to their strong squad and home advantage, Ndidi insists Rwanda must be the priority.
“We are not looking at the game against South Africa yet, because the game against Rwanda is the most important one right now, and we can’t let it slip,” Ndidi told Pooja.
“If we let it slip, it’s finished. If we let the Rwanda game slip, there’s nothing like rivalry in South Africa. We have to win the game against Rwanda first, then focus on South Africa.”
Nigeria are favourites on paper, but their recent form has been inconsistent. A strong performance against Rwanda would boost their confidence and send a message to the rest of the group.
However, anything less than victory could be disastrous for Eric Chelle’s men and leave their World Cup dream hanging by a thread.
