Nigerian para-powerlifting legend Roland Ezuruike has declared that Team Nigeria is heading into the 2026 Commonwealth Games with one of the best preparation programmes in its history, expressing confidence that the athletes will deliver outstanding performances in Glasgow.
The Paralympic champion, who is preparing for his third Commonwealth Games appearance, praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for providing athletes with improved welfare, training facilities and an early camping programme ahead of the Games.
Ezuruike has enjoyed a distinguished international career, winning Commonwealth silver in Glasgow 2014 before upgrading to gold at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, in addition to multiple Paralympic and world titles.
“This is one of the best preparations we’ve had as a team. The National Sports Commission has done everything possible to ensure we are ready for the Commonwealth Games,” Ezuruike said.
The experienced para-powerlifter said the atmosphere in Team Nigeria’s training camp has been positive, with athletes fully focused on delivering medals for the country.
He also commended the Commission’s decision to organise an overseas training camp, describing it as a major boost ahead of one of the biggest multi-sport events on the international calendar.
“The support has been excellent, and I believe Nigerians will see the results when the competition begins. We’re determined to perform even better this time,” he added.
Ezuruike remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated para-athletes, having consistently represented the country with distinction at the Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Para Powerlifting Championships.
Team Nigeria is currently completing its final phase of preparations in Aberdeen, Scotland, before travelling to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, where the country’s athletes will compete across several sports in pursuit of another successful outing on the international stage.
