Weightlifting Federation Turns Attention Fully On Olympic Games

The Weightlifting Federation of Nigeria (WFN) has turned its attention fully on preparations for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France, with a view towards returning home with medals.

This was disclosed by the federation’s president, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdul, as he unfolded the weightlifting body’s immediate and future plans for the year.

Although he admitted that Nigeria may not have more than two lifters at Paris 2024, Abdul stressed that it is imperative that the couple of athletes who will represent the country should return home with medals.

Abdul declared, “Our next focus is on preparations for the Olympics. We will start our camp on the 1st of May and take it all the way to the Olympics. We hope that the government will assist us along the line.

“Our athletes are ready, and we know they will do well. We don’t want to just participate but to win at least a medal. One of our lifters has already qualified, and we expect another to qualify on the 15th of May, based on points.

“So, we expect two of our lifters to try their best at the Olympics, after which we’ll have our national championship for senior, youth and junior athletes.

“That will help us build our team for the Commonwealth Games. We need to build new athlete’s that will give us assurances of medals when they are competing. We also want to focus on the men. For some time now, we’ve been depending on the females.”
