President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Victor Ochei, has expressed pride and optimism after Nigeria secured promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II with a hard-fought victory over Uzbekistan in Lagos on Sunday.
Speaking shortly after the decisive tie, Ochei praised the players, officials and fans for their collective effort, describing the achievement as a significant step forward for Nigerian tennis.
“I just want to say thank you to everyone who came out to cheer for us. It was fantastic,”
Ochei said. “We are now in the Davis Cup World Group II and we are going to build on this and move to the next level.”
The NTF president reaffirmed his long-term ambition for the country, confidently stating that Nigeria has the potential to rise further in the global tennis hierarchy.
“By the grace of God, Nigeria will get to World Group I,” he added. “This is only the beginning. We will do it again and again.”
Elated Ochei also acknowledged the efforts of match officials, international representatives and organisers who ensured the success of the tie, while reserving special praise for the players and supporters who created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the competition.
“I am very proud of these players and of Nigerian fans,” he said. “Some of the players came in from outside the country, but they chose Nigeria as home and played with pride for the nation.”
Nigeria’s qualification for Davis Cup World Group II marks another milestone for the sport in the country and provides a platform to further develop tennis and compete consistently at a higher international level.
“Thank you for supporting us, thank you for supporting Nigeria,” Ochei concluded. “God bless you all and God bless Nigeria.”
