‘We Want More Goals, But Winning Is the Key!’ — Eguavoen Sends Strong Message Ahead of Super Falcons’ Second Leg Against Comoros

Super Falcons interim head coach Austin Eguavoen has insisted that Nigeria will not become complacent despite holding a two-goal advantage over Comoros, declaring that victory remains the ultimate objective ahead of their second-leg encounter.

Sports247 reports that the ten-time African champions secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Comoros in the first leg at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, putting themselves in a favourable position heading into the return fixture.

However, speaking during the pre-match press conference, Eguavoen emphasised that his team would approach the second leg with the same determination and collective responsibility that delivered their first-leg success.

“Football is a collective, not an individual sport. Congratulations to the entire team for the first-leg win. As we enjoy the two-goal advantage, we will also try as much as possible to win,” Eguavoen stated.

Despite expressing his desire to see the Super Falcons score more goals, the experienced tactician stressed that maintaining tactical discipline and a well-organised team structure would remain his priority.

“Maybe one, two or three, I am interested in goals, but the structure of the team comes first. Winning is still the key,” he explained.

The former Super Eagles coach believes that a balanced approach will be crucial as Nigeria seek to complete the assignment without allowing their opponents an opportunity to overturn the deficit.

Eguavoen also hinted at tactical adjustments for the second leg, revealing that his technical crew would make changes aimed at improving the team’s overall performance.

“Crossing the line is more important. We will change some tactics a bit to make it easy for us,” he said.

While Nigeria enjoyed a comfortable first-leg victory, Eguavoen acknowledged the quality of the opposition, pointing to the international exposure of several Comoros players.

“About 90 per cent of these players are playing in France, and they won 30-0 in their previous game. So, scary, but the first leg is gone, and we will try to make the game easy for our own good,” he stated.

His remarks underline the importance of respecting the opposition regardless of the advantage Nigeria currently possess.

Rather than relying entirely on their first-leg result, the Super Falcons will aim to dictate proceedings and secure another positive outcome.

In another encouraging development, Eguavoen confirmed that the Super Falcons have no injury concerns ahead of the encounter, giving the technical crew a full complement of available players.

“No injury worries in the team,” he confirmed.

The interim coach also expressed satisfaction with the performances of the 27 players currently in camp, particularly the impressive qualities displayed by several newcomers.

“For the first time, we have a lot of debutants in the team. We have 27 players in camp, and they have been performing well. Aggression, physicality and lots more are embedded in the team,” Eguavoen revealed.

The presence of several debutants offers the coaching crew an opportunity to assess emerging talents while maintaining the competitive standards expected of the Super Falcons.

With a healthy two-goal advantage, a fully fit squad and growing competition for places, Nigeria enter the second leg in a strong position.

Nevertheless, Eguavoen’s message remains clear: the first-leg victory is only half the job, and the Super Falcons must finish the assignment with another disciplined and convincing performance.
