According to Oliseh, the country’s football identity should be built on speed, technical ability, and aggression, qualities he believes define Nigerian players.
“That should be our identity,” he said.
The former midfielder stressed that this philosophy must not be limited to the senior national team, but should be implemented from the grassroots level, starting with the under-15 teams and progressing all the way to the Super Eagles.
“It has to be from the base,” he implied.
For Oliseh, consistency in playing style across all levels will make it easier for players to transition into the senior team, ensuring continuity and cohesion.
“It creates understanding,” he noted.
He also addressed the sensitive issue of foreign-born players, acknowledging their importance but warning against losing the team’s core identity.
“We must keep our soul,” he stressed.
Oliseh suggested that a significant portion of the squad should be made up of players developed within Nigeria’s football system, arguing that they better understand the country’s football culture.
“It’s about balance,” he added.
His comments come at a time when Nigeria is reflecting on its football direction following recent disappointments, including failure to qualify for major tournaments.
For many, the absence of a clear identity has been a recurring issue.
Oliseh’s call highlights the need for long-term planning and structural alignment across all levels of the game.
Because in football, success is not just about talent.
It’s about identity.
And as Oliseh insists, Nigeria must define theirs, and stay true to it.
