‘We Miss Aruna’ Oshodi Explains Slow Start — Backs New Generation To Lead Nigeria’s Table Tennis Revival

Vice President of International Table Tennis Federation Africa and former head of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation Waheed Enitan Oshodi has attributed Nigeria’s slow start to the year to the absence of star player Quadri Aruna.

According to Oshodi, Aruna’s injury struggles have had a significant impact on the country’s competitiveness, particularly in major team events where his presence often makes the difference.

“We feel his absence,” he said, highlighting the importance of the African star to Nigeria’s success.

Aruna has long been the face of Nigerian table tennis, consistently delivering strong performances on the international stage.

Without him, Oshodi admitted, the team lacks its usual edge.

“It weakens us,” he implied, pointing to the gap left by the experienced player.

However, despite the current challenges, Oshodi remains optimistic.

He expressed hope that Aruna will recover in time for upcoming championships, potentially restoring Nigeria’s strength in key competitions.

“We hope he returns soon,” he noted.

Beyond immediate concerns, Oshodi also emphasized the importance of focusing on the future.

He highlighted the emergence of a new generation of players coming through academies, including those established by Aruna himself, as a positive sign for Nigerian table tennis.

“We must build the next generation,” he stressed.

For Oshodi, the path forward involves balancing reliance on established stars with the development of young talent.

By investing in grassroots programs and nurturing upcoming players, Nigeria can ensure continuity and long-term success.

As the team looks ahead, the challenge will be navigating the present while preparing for the future.

But with Aruna’s potential return and a new wave of talent emerging, there is reason for optimism.

Because in sport, every setback can also be a step toward renewal.
