Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, says Nigeria’s mission at the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations is far from over, despite sealing a hard-fought semi-final spot and securing qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Sports247 reports.
Nigeria edged Senegal 3-1 on penalties after a tense goalless 120 minutes in their quarter-final clash at the Cairo International Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The result marks Nigeria’s return to the global youth stage where the team highest attainment was a second placed finish in 1989 and 2005.
“We trained for this moment. Every possible scenario was prepared for, including penalties,” Zubairu told reporters after the game.
“The boys stuck to the plan and executed it when it mattered the most. That’s what champions do.”
Zubairu, who guided his team through the group stage without a loss, praised his players’ discipline and cohesion but stressed that the team’s focus remains fixed on lifting the trophy for a record-extending eighth time.
“This is a big win for Nigeria, but we are not celebrating yet,” he said.
“We came here with two goals, which to qualify for the World Cup and challenge for the title. One box is ticked, now we keep pushing.”
Nigeria’s penalty shootout triumph not only prolongs their stay in Egypt but also reinforces their stature as one of the continent’s youth football powerhouses.
The Flying Eagles have already showcased growth and resilience, hallmarks of Zubairu’s coaching approach.
“They’ve matured through every game tactically, mentally, emotionally,” he added. “That’s the true development path, and I’m proud of every single one of them.”
Nigeria will play in the semi-finals later this week as they continue their quest for continental glory.
