WAFCON: Oparanozie Urges Super Falcons to Recall Experienced Players

Former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie has called on the team’s technical crew to reintegrate experienced players into the squad ahead of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Reacting to the selection for Nigeria’s recent international outing against Cameroon, Oparanozie said that while she welcomes the inclusion of new players, relying solely on them for a major tournament could hurt the team’s chances.

“I don’t think they will take everybody from this team because these are just new entrants. They don’t have the experience and a lot of them haven’t really had time to be around the team for so long and all of that.”

She warned that heading into a tournament of WAFCON’s magnitude with a largely inexperienced squad could be risky.

“So taking some of them into a tournament of that calibre, I think it would be disastrous for the team. So it’s better we stick to our normal squad.”

Oparanozie, who played a key role in several of Nigeria’s past WAFCON triumphs, believes a balance of fresh talent and tested experience is essential if the Falcons are to make a strong push for the title.
