Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) received a timely boost on Sunday as the arrival of forwards Esther Okoronkwo, Michelle Aloze and Uchenna Kanu increased the Super Falcons’ training camp to 22 players.
Their arrival comes as head coach Justine Madugu reaffirmed his side’s determination to successfully defend Nigeria’s continental crown despite the enormous pressure that comes with being Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
Speaking after another training session, Madugu admitted that the Super Falcons have become the team every nation wants to beat but stressed that his players remain fully focused on achieving their objective.
“We are holding something precious that everybody wants, but we will remain resolute and focused to achieve our objectives,” Madugu said.
The coach acknowledged the responsibility of defending the WAFCON title but insisted that the pressure would only inspire the team to perform at its best.
Madugu also warned against underestimating any opponent, noting that African women’s football has become increasingly competitive, with every team capable of causing an upset.
According to him, the Super Falcons will approach every match with maximum concentration, discipline and respect, knowing that every opponent will be highly motivated to dethrone the reigning champions.
The arrival of Okoronkwo and Kanu has further strengthened the squad as preparations gather momentum ahead of the tournament, while the coaching crew continues to await the remaining invited players before final tactical drills begin.
Nigeria will be aiming to extend its remarkable dominance in African women’s football by capturing another WAFCON title, but Madugu believes only hard work, unity and total commitment will make that ambition a reality.
With the camp now swelling to 21 players, expectations continue to rise as the Super Falcons intensify preparations for another quest for continental glory in Morocco.
