Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has taken her Women’s Africa Cup of Nations goals tally to 16, further strengthening her position as the second-highest scorer in the history of the competition.
Oshoala was on target in Nigeria’s emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt, converting from the penalty spot to add another milestone to an already remarkable WAFCON career.
The goal was her second of the 2026 tournament, having previously scored the winner in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Zambia.
With 16 goals across five WAFCON editions, Oshoala has now moved further clear of former Equatorial Guinea international Genoveva Añonman, who finished her career with 14 goals in the competition.
The Nigerian forward’s consistency across different generations of the Super Falcons has been a defining feature of her continental career.
Her WAFCON goals have come across the 2014, 2016, 2018, 2024 and 2026 editions, underlining her remarkable longevity at the highest level of African women’s football.
Oshoala’s best campaign came in 2016, when she scored six goals to finish as the tournament’s leading scorer.
Despite her latest landmark, the 31-year-old remains some distance behind the competition’s all-time record holder, compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha.
Nkwocha has an extraordinary 34 WAFCON goals to her name and remains the only player to have scored more than 30 goals in the tournament.
She also won the Golden Boot four times and famously scored 11 goals at the 2010 edition, a record for a single WAFCON tournament.
Oshoala’s latest goal, however, further establishes her as one of the most prolific players ever to grace Africa’s premier women’s football championship.
With Nigeria now through to the knockout stage, Oshoala has an opportunity to add to her tally and potentially move closer to Nkwocha’s historic record.
