WAFCON 2024: Justin Madugu — The X-Factor in Nigeria’s “Mission X” for a Record 10th Title ?

As the Super Falcons of Nigeria embark on their bold quest for a record 10th Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title—aptly dubbed “Mission X”—one man stands firmly at the helm of this potentially historic campaign: Justin Madugu.

A seasoned tactician and respected figure in Nigerian football, Madugu has quietly emerged as the strategic force behind the team’s renewed ambition.

Following the 2024 Olympics, he took over from Randy Waldrum and has since stamped his identity on a squad determined to etch their names in African football history.

Justin Madugu is no stranger to the Super Falcons setup or the continental stage. His résumé speaks volumes: a former assistant coach during Nigeria’s WAFCON triumphs in 2014 and 2018, and part of the technical crew in 2012 and 2022. His wealth of experience spans youth and senior levels, both at home and abroad:

FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup (Trinidad & Tobago 2010)

FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (Chile 2008)

FIFA Women’s World Cups (Canada 2015, France 2019)

All-Africa Games Bronze Medalist (2015)

WAFU Cup Champion (2019)

Madugu has also made his mark in the men’s game. He was assistant coach of the Nigeria Super Eagles B team between 2009 and 2010, and led the country’s Mini-Football team to qualify for the WMF World Cup in Perth, Australia.

Coach and Scholar

What truly sets Madugu apart is the depth of his academic and professional credentials—qualities rarely found in one individual in African football. A CAF A and B licensed coach and certified CAF/NFF instructor, Madugu is also deeply committed to developing other coaches across the country.

His academic accomplishments include:

M.Sc. in Sports Psychology, El-Roi University, London

M.Sc. in Sports Management, El-Roi University, London

PGD & Advanced Diploma in Public Administration, Adamawa State Polytechnic

Diploma in Library Science, Bayero University, Kano

This blend of tactical expertise and academic rigor positions him as more than just a coach—he is a football academic, administrator, and educator.

Leading with Results

Since stepping into the top job, Madugu has guided the Super Falcons through key WAFCON and Olympic qualification matches with quiet efficiency. While Waldrum handled the decisive Olympic playoff against South Africa, it was Madugu who engineered the team’s path to that stage.

Under his leadership, Nigeria has lost just once—a friendly against France. His recent matches highlight both his tactical acumen and squad rotation ability:

2-0 win vs Cameroon

1-1 draw away vs Portugal

3-1 win vs Ghana

These results reflect a coach in tune with his players and able to adapt his strategy under pressure. He has earned the confidence of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the trust of his squad.

The Man for Mission X

The Super Falcons last lifted the WAFCON trophy in 2018. Now, with the tournament returning to Morocco—the same ground where they narrowly missed out in the 2022 semi-finals—the hunger to reclaim the continental crown is palpable.

Madugu leads a team rich in talent, blending seasoned veterans with promising newcomers.

The stakes are high, the ambition is clear, and the goal is singular: make history with a 10th WAFCON title.

In a tournament where margins are slim and pressure runs deep, Nigeria’s real X-Factor might not be on the pitch—but on the touchline.

Justin Madugu has spent years preparing for this moment. Mission X is here. Will he deliver?

Magudu Assures : “We are very focused on our realisable and achievable target of Mission X.

“The girls are ready and are showing real hunger for victory, and team spirit is high. We are looking forward to our first match on Sunday against Tunisia.”
