WAFCON 2024 FALL-OUT: Gusau Confesses – I Was Tense But Believed A Miracle Could Happen

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has reflected on the Super Falcons’ heroic victory against Morocco on Saturday and confessed that he was tense when the team went down 2-0 but still believed a miracle could save the day.

Sports247 reports that the Falcons eventually turned the tide against the Moroccans to clinch a 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, where Gasau was among VIPs watching the final live.

The NFF buff has now shot his mind back to his thought processes during the thick of action and admitted that seeing the Falcons turn the game around was a huge relief for him and other Nigerians in the stadium.

Gusau retorted, “It was a great moment for all of us over there as well as Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. It is a victory that everybody must be proud of.

“It’s something every Nigerian must be proud of. A lot of people did not believe it could happen, but it came in a way that made it very special.”

He further reasoned that coming from two goals down to defeat the host nation in a final of that magnitude was no mean feat, hence the massive bolts of celebration unleashed by the Falcons and their fans after the final whistle.

“For you to be playing against the hosts, Morocco, with what has been going on across social media, and we were 2-0 down, I know a lot of people had started leaving their TV sets.

“But, at the end of the day, when the rhythm changed and the music turned, we were celebrating,” Nigeria’s number one football official recounted.

Gusau concluded by acknowledging that it was bound to be a tough match all along and, though he confessed to being nervous when the Falcons went behind, he told himself that miracles still happen in football.

“We already knew it was not going to be easy, but I never thought we would be 2-0 down in the first half. So, the place had become tense for me.

“I did not know how to control myself, but I was able to manage the situation because I told myself, ‘This is football,’ and I believed a miracle could still happen,” Gusau revealed.
