English Women’s Super League side Everton FC has praised Nigerian defender Toni Payne for her standout performance in the Super Falcons’ commanding 5–0 victory over Zambia at the ongoing 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The quarterfinal clash, held at the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco, saw Nigeria assert dominance from start to finish.
Goals from Osinachi Ohale, Ihezuo Esther Okwonkwo and Folashade Ijamilusi secured an emphatic win, sealing Nigeria’s spot in the semi-finals of the continental championship.
Payne, who was solid at right-back, played a key role in maintaining a clean sheet for Nigeria, neutralizing Zambia’s attacking threats of Babra Banda, Racheal Kundananji and contributing to several attacking moves.
Following the win, Everton took to their official social media platform to celebrate the result and Payne contribution:
“A comfortable victory sees Toni Payne’s Nigeria into the semi-finals of #WAFCON2025!
Two more to go, Naija!”
Alozie signed a short-term contract with Everton in July 2024 after impressing during her time with Sevilla FC.
Her move to Merseyside marked her first stint in England, and she has since earned praise for her consistency and defensive strength.
With the Super Falcons now just two games away from their 10th WAFCON title, Tony Payne and her teammates will look to maintain their momentum in the semi-final against the defending Champions South Africa on Tuesday.
