Speaking ahead of the grand opening ceremony of the festival—tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024—Vice President Shettima described the National Sports Festival as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s unity, a celebration of diversity, and a vital platform for nurturing the country’s future champions.

“This Festival is more than a gathering of athletes; it is a declaration of our shared dreams as a nation,” the Vice President said. “Through sports, we rediscover the strength of our unity, the depth of our talent, and the boundless spirit of our youth.”

Set to be hosted at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, the opening ceremony promises an explosion of culture, colour, and national pride, featuring artistic performances and symbolic highlights of Nigeria’s heritage.

Vice President Shettima commended the Ogun State Government, led by His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, for what he described as “an exceptional standard of preparedness and hospitality,” ensuring that athletes and visitors from across the federation feel welcomed and inspired.

Over 10,000 athletes from the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the pioneering “38th state”—the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA)—will compete in 33 different sports during the two-week event, making it one of the largest editions in the history of the Festival.

The Vice President also lauded the efforts of the National Sports Commission leadership—Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade—for revitalizing the Festival as a key driver of youth engagement and national cohesion.

As the nation turns its eyes to Abeokuta, Vice President Shettima’s presence and planned declaration will mark a powerful statement of support for sports as a unifying force and a vital component of Nigeria’s future.

With venues primed, athletes ready, and the spirit of the nation high, Gateway Games Ogun 2024 is poised to begin—where the nation’s best will compete, and the dream of unity through sport will take centre stage once again.
