Victor Ikpeba Questions Super Eagles Mentality As World Cup Hopes Hang In Balance

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has raised questions about the mentality of some Super Eagles players, suggesting that a gap exists between club form and national team commitment and warning that talent alone will not secure success on the continent as World Cup hopes hang in the balance.

Ikpeba said he is troubled by the difference in intensity and application shown by players when they don the green-white-green compared with their performances at club level.

“They don’t give enough when they pull on the national team shirt,” Ikpeba said, bluntly summarising his concerns.

The former forward noted that while many players display outstanding skills in their respective clubs, those attributes sometimes fail to translate to international fixtures because of attitude, mindset or lack of cohesion.

“Talent isn’t enough when you play on the continent. You need the right mentality — commitment, toughness and a willingness to sacrifice for the jersey,” he said.

Ikpeba recalled examples from his playing days when collective spirit and mental strength made the difference in crucial qualifiers and tournaments.

“We were noted for our hunger and unity. Modern players must show the same hunger for the national side; otherwise, our chances suffer,” he said, urging current generation to reflect on the responsibilities that come with national selection.

He further warned that coaches and handlers should address mentality as a measurable component of selection and preparation.

“Coaches must motivate and demand it, and players must respond. If not, selections should favour those who bring the right attitude,” Ikpeba said, advocating a meritocratic approach that rewards mental rigour as much as technical ability.

With qualification scenarios tight and fans anxious, Ikpeba’s remarks add pressure for introspection. He concluded with a call for unity and higher standards: “We owe it to the nation to give everything when we represent her. Anything less is a disservice to the badge and to the millions who follow us.”
