Veteran Journalist Chris Okechukwu Questions Chelle’s Reported Salary Demands

Veteran Nigerian journalist Chris Okechukwu has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the reported contractual terms and salary demands of Super Eagles head coach Éric Sékou Chelle, expressing strong reservations about the figures being circulated.

Speaking during a recent analysis, Okechukwu questioned whether Chelle’s reported $130,000 salary demand aligns with his track record and achievements.

“My take is that he did not deserve that amount. This was a man who came in begging,” Okechukwu said, suggesting that the financial package should reflect performance and pedigree.

He further argued that recent achievements should be placed in context, noting that Nigeria’s past successes set a higher benchmark.

“The bronze wasn’t a big deal; we’ve had eight before. Even the silver under José Peseiro — while commendable — didn’t push us to the ultimate limit,” he added.

Okechukwu also compared the reported earnings of previous Super Eagles coaches, stating that Finidi George earned approximately $12,500 monthly, Chelle was previously on $55,000, while Peseiro reportedly earned $75,000 during his tenure.

In his assessment, Nigeria has other coaching options with stronger credentials, including former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh, whom he described as more experienced. However, Okechukwu suggested that issues around administrative “control” may complicate such appointments.

“Sunday has better experience, but the problem is control — something he won’t allow. We also have several others who are capable,” he concluded.

The discussion highlights the broader conversation about coaching stability, remuneration, and long-term planning within Nigerian football, as stakeholders continue to debate the best direction for the national team moving forward.
