Former Nigeria youth international Ambrose Vanzekin has urged caution ahead of coach Eric Chelle’s squad announcement for this month’s Unity Cup, warning that inviting too many home-based players could hinder team cohesion and leave little room to experiment before crucial World Cup qualifiers.
“The coach cannot take a risk and go with new faces,” Vanzekin said. “It is a very difficult task as home-based players cannot just go there and understand what they want to do. The best he can do is get one or two players to add to the team, which is very good.”

Vanzekin added that only a handful of established stars, such as Victor Osimhen, consistently demonstrate commitment to the national side, while many others have yet to fully embrace the Super Eagles jersey.
“For me, this Nigerian national team, I’m not seeing a lot of vibes from them. Just a few players like Osimhen and a few others. The other players are not committing themselves to the national team.”
With both the Unity Cup and the World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, Vanzekin believes Chelle must strike the right balance between giving local talents exposure and maintaining a core of experienced internationals.
