Unity, Speed, and Celebration: Asaba Gears Up For Grand Closing Of 9th National Youth Games

The curtain will fall on the 9th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) on Saturday, September 6, 2025, with a colorful closing ceremony at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State.

The ceremony is expected to draw top dignitaries, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — represented by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko — alongside the Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori, and the Director General of the NSC and Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Hon. Bukola Olopade. Delegations, sports administrators, and fans from across Nigeria will also join in the festivities.

Before the lights dim on this year’s Games, the final day will deliver a burst of energy with classic track relays — the 4x100m (male and female), 4x400m (male, female, and mixed relay), and the medley relay (male and female). Traditionally the climax of the NYG, these events promise an electrifying showcase of speed, strategy, and teamwork, with many tipping Nigeria’s next generation of sprint kings and queens to emerge from Asaba’s tracks.

On the medals table as of Friday night, Team Lagos continues to lead the pack with 46 gold, 37 silver, and 18 bronze medals. Edo State follows with 33 gold, 11 silver, and 20 bronze, while host state Delta sits in third with 26 gold, 33 silver, and 32 bronze medals.

Over the past week, the Games have once again lived up to their billing as the country’s foremost grassroots sports festival — unearthing prodigies, fostering unity, and celebrating the boundless potential of Nigerian youth.

As the flame of the 9th National Youth Games prepares to be extinguished in Asaba, the memories of brilliance, resilience, and youthful excellence are sure to inspire the journey toward future championships.
