UNITY CUP FALL-OUT: Sunday Oliseh Stays Silent On Scorecard For Eric Chelle

Former Super Eagles captain and head coach Sunday Ogorchukwu Oliseh has opted to stay silent on a scorecard for the current handler of the Nigerian national team, Eric Sekou Chelle, whose team won the 2025 Unity Cup in London on Saturday.

Sports247 reports that, while some critics have agreed to soft-pedal in their attacks against the Franco-Malian tactician, considering he has won a trophy after just four matches in charge of the Eagles, Oliseh insists he has nothing to say about the former Mali national team gaffer.

Oliseh, who played for Reggiana and Juventus of Italy, as well as Ajax of Holland and Borussia Dortmund of Germany during his heyday, opted not to rate Chelle’s style and efforts but stressed that he would have preferred seeing an indigenous Nigerian coach in charge of the Eagles.

He posited, “It’s no secret that I am not a fan of the guy. I feel that this job, which is the prized one in the country, should be left for their people to do. That’s my opinion about it.”

When faced with the fact that Chelle has won two matches and drawn two, the second of which his team still won via penalties last Saturday against Jamaica in the Unity Cup final, Oliseh pointed out that his view is not about the gaffer as a person or his results, but due to his emotions in favour of Indigenous coaches.

“I really feel it’s a sign of disrespect to the coaches and people of Nigeria. So, I’m not really going to comment on how good the coach is or not. I don’t know the guy. He looks like a nice guy, but I just feel that my country has suffered enough. The coaches, the players, the ex-internationals … they have suffered enough. They have given a lot. So, let them do the job,” Oliseh submitted.
