UNITY CUP 2025: Sam Sodje Wants Home-based Players To Feature Against Ghana On Wednesday

Former Super Eagles’ defender, Sam Sodje has disclosed that he would be excited seeing some home-based players line out for Nigeria against Ghana during Wednesday’s match at the 2025 Unity Cup in London, England.

Sports247 reports that both anglophone West African teams will lock horns in a potentially explosive second semi-final of this year’s Unity Cup at GTech Community Stadium, which happens to be the home ground of one of Sodje’s former clubs, Brentford.

While expressing a high level of confidence in the ability of the English Premier League club’s officials to provide a good atmosphere for the game, Sodje urged Eagles’ coach, Eric Chelle to use the opportunity to test new players in his squad.

Sodje stated, “It’s a great idea to have these types of games. When you get this type of friendly, you have to test players. That’s why I’m really happy that some home-based players will be playing.

“If you know your football, you will see this as a chance for one or two players to perform really well and catch the eyes of the coach. It’s a great opportunity for the players to show what they can do.”

He went on to reveal his expectations for smooth playing conditions at the match venue, which will also host Tuesday’s first semi-final between Jamaica and Trinidad, as well as both the third place match and final on Saturday.

Sam Sodje enthused, “I’m happy it’s being played in the UK. It’s a great exposure for these players, and it will be at the ground of one of my former teams.

The pitch is incredible, and the community has many African players. The community is also full of African fans. So, the crowd will be there, and the exposure for the local players will be good.”

The former centre back concluded by reiterating his desire to see players from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) line out for the Eagles in Wednesday’s game and ended with a prayer that everything will go well for the squad.

“It’s a good idea that the coach invited many local players. Definitely, the chance is for one or two of them to perform well. So, good luck to them,” Sodje supplicated.
