UNITY CUP 2025: Former National Team Star Duke Udi Gives Super Eagles Low Marks Versus Ghana, Jamaica

Ex-international attacker, Duke Udi has rated the Super Eagles’ performance low at the 2025 Unity Cup in London, and attributed it to the absence of many top players from the squad that represented Nigeria at the four-nation invitational competition, Sports247 reports.

While many Nigerians are giving the Eagles thumbs up for clinching the cup on Saturday, after defeating Jamaica 5-4 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw at regulation time, Udi opined that it was another lacklustre performance by the three-time African champions.

He pointed out that the biggest missing point for the Eagles in both of their games versus Ghana and Jamaica at Brentford’s GTech Community Stadium in West London was their inability to string a chain of passes together.

Udi posited, “Congratulations to the Super Eagles but, in terms of the quality of football, personally, I was not impressed. The passes were not flowing. With all due respect, we need quality in our national team.”

The former Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan maverick player, who starred for Grasshopper FC of Switzerland after excelling as a youth international, but did not enjoy a successful spell with the senior national team, concluded by stressing that only established players should be relied on in the Eagles.

“You can’t take the top quality players away from the national team. I disagree with people who say we should leave the big players out. We can not leave them out, because they bring quality from Europe into the Super Eagles,” Udi reiterated
