Nigeria’s record-breaking women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have expressed heartfelt gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), and Corporate Nigeria for the thunderous reception they received following their historic 5th consecutive Afrobasket title win in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The champions, who were flown back to Nigeria in a chartered flight arranged by the NSC and NBBF, were received like royalty and presented their trophy at the Presidential Villa—marking a proud moment for Nigerian basketball and women’s sports.

Team captain Amy Okonkwo, who was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, described the experience as “unforgettable” and “overwhelming,” thanking all who contributed to the emotional homecoming.
“My girls and I are sincerely overwhelmed to see how the whole country welcomed us and showed us love,” Okonkwo said. “It’s been a wonderful and indescribable experience, and we are even more motivated now to do more for the country.”
She extended special thanks to President Tinubu, praising his fatherly gesture and words of encouragement, and acknowledged the inspiring support of three key female ministers—of Women Affairs, Culture and Creative Economy, and State for Finance.
Okonkwo also reserved glowing praise for the NSC leadership, particularly Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and DG Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their tireless commitment to the team’s welfare throughout the tournament.
The team further recognized the immense contributions of long-time basketball sponsors Zenith Bank Plc and other corporate partners including NNPC, whose continued backing they described as vital to their success.
Okonkwo gave a deeply personal tribute to the NBBF leadership led by Engr. Musa Kida, calling him “a father and leader” whose passion and dedication have propelled the team to greatness.
“None of this would have been possible without the visionary leadership of Engr Musa Kida, our GM Musa Adamu, and the entire NBBF board. Their sacrifices inspire us daily,” she said.
In his remarks, NBBF President Kida expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for making the D’Tigress’ victory a national celebration, adding that the moment marks a new chapter of growth and recognition for basketball in Nigeria.
As D’Tigress continue to bask in the glory of their fifth straight continental crown, their message is clear: this is just the beginning of greater things to come—powered by unity, support, and a shared dream for Nigerian basketball.
