Former Nigeria U-17 star Umar Abubakar saw his third Primeira Liga outing for Famalicão this past weekend, coming on in the 89th minute during their 2-1 home defeat to reigning champions Sporting Lisbon.
Abubakar, born in Kano State, joined Famalicão in the summer on a five-year deal after a prolific season in Belgium with Jong Gent, where he scored 21 goals in 27 matches. He made his first and second appearances in earlier Liga Portugal games without finding the net, but has gradually been introduced into senior matchday squads to gain top-flight experience.

Though his time on the pitch against Sporting was brief, entering so late in the game, his presence underscores the coaching staff’s growing confidence in allowing him exposure against high-profile opponents. Matches like this serve as stepping stones: intense tempo, tight margins, and little room for error — invaluable for a young striker’s development.
While he did not have enough time to influence the outcome, Abubakar’s strength, aerial ability, and instincts remain talked about, based on his youth credentials and past performances. Observers expect that as he adjusts to the pace and physical demands of the Primeira Liga, he will be given more minutes and perhaps even his first start in due course.
For now, Abubakar is in the process of making the shift — from being a youth prospect in Belgium to challenging himself in one of Europe’s competitive mid-top flight leagues. If he continues to learn, adapt and seize his opportunities, many believe he could become a frequent name on the scoresheet and among the more exciting young Nigerian forwards active in Portugal.
