UCL: Mubarak Suleiman Ends Decade-Long Wait For Nigerian Teenagers

Nigerian midfielder Mubarak Suleiman has reached a significant milestone in European football after becoming the first Nigerian teenager to start a UEFA Champions League match since Alex Iwobi achieved the feat in 2016.

The 19-year-old earned a place in Slavia Prague’s starting eleven against Fenerbahçe on Tuesday, October 20, as the Czech side fought back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.

Suleiman’s inclusion brought renewed attention to a record that had remained untouched by a Nigerian teenager for more than a decade. According to reports citing Opta statistics, the last player to achieve the feat was Iwobi, who started for Arsenal against Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 in March 2016.

Iwobi’s Arsenal lost 3-1 in that encounter and exited the competition 5-1 on aggregate. Suleiman has now written his own chapter in the competition’s history, earning a starting role at a young age on one of European football’s biggest stages.

His appearance also represents another step in his development at Slavia Prague, where opportunities in the Champions League could help him gain valuable experience against established European opposition.

The match itself provided plenty of drama. Fenerbahçe raced into a 2-0 lead through Oguz Aydin and Mason Greenwood inside the opening 11 minutes, putting the visitors under immediate pressure.

Slavia responded through Lukas Provod in the 15th minute before Pavel Kacor struck in the 90th minute to secure a point for the Czech side.

For Suleiman, the result added context to an important personal achievement. Having made his Champions League debut as a substitute against Sabah FK on October 13, he followed it up with a starting appearance against Fenerbahçe.

The milestone does not automatically guarantee a regular place in Slavia Prague’s starting lineup, but it gives the teenager a notable achievement to build on as he continues his career.

With Nigerian players continuing to pursue opportunities across Europe, Suleiman’s progress will be worth monitoring as he seeks to turn this landmark appearance into a consistent presence at the highest level of club football.
