Super Falcons forward Uchenna Kanu has expressed deep disappointment after being dropped from Nigeria’s squad just days before the start of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), revealing that she received no clear explanation for the decision.
Kanu, one of Nigeria’s most technically gifted attackers and a reliable performer for both club and country, said she was left shocked by the late communication — especially after already beginning her travel preparations.
“The coach didn’t give me any clear reason why I was left out of the tournament, even after I asked,” she said.
With the WAFCON 2025 tagged as “Mission X”, the forward explained that she had completed key steps towards joining the team, only for the unexpected update to arrive.
“I felt sad because I had already started processing my visa, only to be informed I wasn’t part of the team a few days before the tournament,” she added.
The surprise omission sparked discussion among Nigerian football fans, many of whom expected Kanu to be part of the squad due to her pace, versatility, and experience on the continental stage. Her absence then, raises questions about the team’s attacking options and the communication process within the camp.
Kanu’s remarks highlight the emotional impact such decisions can have on players, and underline the importance of clear, timely communication at the national team level.
The Falcons are expected to defend their WAFCON crown in Morocco next year, having sealed qualification with a 3-1 aggregate win over the Benin Republic in October.
The tournament will double as a qualifying event for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the four semi-finalists earning automatic spots and two more heading to intercontinental play-offs.
