Twiga Stars Set for Crucial WAFCON 2026 Qualifier Against Ethiopia

Tanzania’s national women’s football team, the Twiga Stars, will host Ethiopia on Wednesday in a crucial first-leg encounter of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.

Head Coach Bakari Shime has expressed full confidence in his squad’s readiness, saying all preparations have been completed ahead of the high-stakes fixture.

“Our goal is to qualify for the 2026 WAFCON. That’s why we have called up our top players, both those playing abroad and those in the domestic league,” said Shime.

The tactician acknowledged Ethiopia’s quality and past encounters but believes the Twiga Stars’ determination and preparation will make the difference this time.

“We know Ethiopia are a strong side — they’ve given us tough games before. But with the hard work and commitment we’ve put in, I believe nothing will stop us from winning,” he added.

The Twiga Stars will aim to secure a strong result at home before traveling to Addis Ababa for the decisive return leg, which will determine who advances to the 2026 WAFCON finals.

The match marks another important step in Tanzania’s mission to return to continental prominence in women’s football, with local fans expected to turn out in large numbers to rally behind the team at the Azam Complex.
