Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong says the team’s collective experience from past editions of the Africa Cup of Nations will play a crucial role when Nigeria begins its campaign at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, kicking off on 21 December 2025.

Troost-Ekong, who led Nigeria to a bronze medal in 2019 and marshalled the defence during the run to the final in the previous tournament, believes the lessons learned from both triumph and heartbreak will sharpen the team’s mentality this time around.
“The experience of the last AFCON will definitely shape the team. Many of the players were there in 2019 and even in the final last time. They know what it takes now,” he said.
He emphasized that AFCON is not just about talent but about resilience, focus, and emotional maturity — qualities Nigeria has developed over the years.
“It’s a tough competition. Experience matters a lot. These boys have been tested on the biggest stages in Africa, and that gives them an advantage,” he added.
Although Troost-Ekong recently announced his retirement from international football, he confirmed that he will still travel to Morocco to support the squad in person.
“I’ll be there. I want to support the team because Nigeria is in my blood. Even though I’ve passed the baton, I’ll always be behind the Super Eagles,” he said proudly.
The former captain praised the blend of youth and experience in the current squad, noting that the right mindset could propel Nigeria deep into the tournament.
“There’s quality in the team. If they stay united and focused, they can go far. They just need to believe in themselves,” he stated.
He also reminded the players that millions of Nigerians are counting on them to deliver joy after recent disappointments.
“The fans deserve something to celebrate. The boys must play with heart and give everything for the jersey,” he urged.
Troost-Ekong concluded by expressing confidence in the team’s leadership and spirit.
“The foundation is there. Now it’s up to the team to make history,” he said.
