The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive traffic diversion plan ahead of the 2026 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 14.
The government said the diversion is necessary to ensure the smooth conduct of the annual road race and to minimise disruption to vehicular movement across major routes in Victoria Island and Lekki.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed that the marathon will feature two races — the 42-kilometre full marathon and a 10-kilometre race — both of which will run simultaneously on designated routes.
According to Osiyemi, the 42km race will commence at Ahmadu Bello Way by the MRS Filling Station and proceed along the entire Coastal Road, which will also serve as the finishing point.
He added that the 10km race will begin at Durosimi Etti Street in Lekki Phase 1, pass through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Bishop Oluwole Street and Akin Adesola Street, before terminating at Sanusi Fafunwa Street.
The commissioner stated that all adjoining roads, junctions and intersections linked to both race routes will be closed to vehicular movement from 12:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event.
He noted that the affected routes would, however, be reopened intermittently as the marathon progresses to ease traffic flow.
Osiyemi further assured residents that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside other security agencies, would be deployed across affected areas to restrict unauthorised access to the race corridors and ensure the safety of athletes and spectators.
He said traffic management personnel would also be strategically positioned to guide motorists and facilitate the use of alternative routes.
The commissioner urged road users to plan their journeys ahead of time and consider alternative routes or other means of transportation during the exercise.
He appealed for patience from motorists, stressing that the temporary road closures are part of arrangements for the successful hosting of the 11th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
