The Chairman of the Nigeria National League (NNL), George Aluo, has heaped praise on the officiating crew that handled the thrilling Matchday 21 encounter between Gateway United of Abeokuta and Osun United of Osogbo, played on Saturday at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.
Aluo, who was physically present to witness the match — which ended 2-1 in favour of Gateway United — lauded the professionalism and composure of centre referee Babayanju Saheed (Ondo) and his assistants, Alalade Taofeeq and Bako Tajudeen (both from Kwara State).

“I must commend the high level of professionalism displayed by the centre referee, Babayanju Saheed, and his two assistants,” Aluo said.
“They were firm, fair, and completely in control throughout the game. Their performance gives us hope that Nigerian referees have come of age.”
The NNL boss emphasized that consistent, quality officiating, like what was displayed in Abeokuta, is essential to the credibility and development of the league.
He added that the decision to deploy top-rated officials for crucial matches is beginning to pay off, noting that reports from other centres also pointed to high-standard officiating.
“This kind of officiating makes it difficult for teams to complain.
It was a tense, entertaining game, but the officials were solid. When referees perform like this, it boosts confidence in the league system.
I’m pleased with what I saw,” Aluo remarked.
He concluded by urging the league to sustain the momentum ahead of the Super 8, as good officiating remains a cornerstone of fair competition and league integrity.
