Tokyo 2025: Okowa Opens up on Kit Controversy, Backs Team Nigeria to Shine at World Championships

President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has addressed the controversy surrounding Team Nigeria kit and also expressed confidence in the country’s chances at the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Okowa told the press during his visit to Japan, assuring that the athletes are in high spirits and well-prepared for podium finishes.

Okowa dismissed reports of kit-related issues in camp, insisting that the matter was exaggerated and had no bearing on the team’s morale.

According to him, the athletes have been fully kitted, comfortably accommodated in one of Tokyo’s best hotels, and are enjoying adequate meals and security.

“The complete kits have been provided. I met with the athletes and technical team, and everyone is in good spirits. Our athletes are wearing their new kits and focused on competing,” Okowa said.

Okowa also revealed that the AFN is in discussions with kit manufacturers HiRacer for a sponsorship deal, noting that athletes who make the podium will receive cash rewards.

Under the current arrangement, gold medalists will earn $30,000, silver medalists $20,000, and bronze medalists $10,000.

He emphasized that there was no formal agreement yet, but that Nigerian athletes will benefit alongside others already signed by HiRacer.

Reflecting on Day 1 of the Championships, Okowa congratulated Kanyinsola Ajayi and Israel Okon for qualifying for the men’s 100m semi-finals.

Ajayi clocked a stunning 9.88s, his new personal best, while Okon also impressed with a strong performance.

Okowa praised their efforts, urging them to remain focused for the semi-final showdown.

He also hailed Rosemary Chukwuma for her spirited outing in the women’s 100m.

The AFN boss also appreciated the effort of Chukwuebuka Enekwechi for finishing fifth in the men’s shot put final.

Not forgetting Ese Brume, Prestina Ochonogor, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, and Obiageri Pamela Amaechi for showcasing resilience despite missing out on the finals.

The AFN President also clarified concerns about the size of Nigeria’s contingent in Tokyo.

He stated that only 15 athletes, four technical officials, two medical staff, and two administrators were officially accredited, while any other persons present traveled on personal arrangements.

He appealed to Nigerians to support the team wholeheartedly, stressing that their prayers and encouragement would inspire the athletes to greater achievements.
