Tokyo 2020: Nigeria’s D’Tigers Gets Opponents in Australia and Two Others

The draws of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Basketball Tournaments took place today, Tuesday 2nd February, 2021 at FIBA headquarters, the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball and saw Nigeria placed in group B.

Eight teams at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Men’s Basketball Tournament. The OQT winners will be those qualifying through the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in Victoria, Canada; Split, Croatia; Kaunas, Lithuania; and Belgrade Serbia from June 29 to July 4, 2021. These four FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments were postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The winners of each OQT have been drawn into the Olympic Basketball Tournament’s four vacant positions.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers is the best ranked team in Africa having been rated 22nd in the world going by the ranking released by FIBA in December 2020, a feat which they achieved by winning their games against Rwanda, Mali and South Sudan in the recently concluded Afrobasket 2021 qualifiers.

Nigeria has been placed in group B alongside Australia and winners of the qualifiers in Croatia and Belgrade in the competition which is scheduled to hold between July 25th to August 7th 2021.
