President Bola Tinubu has highlighted the achievements of top athletes of Nigerian descent, including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua, as powerful representations of the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Tinubu made the remarks while addressing King Charles III at Windsor Castle during his official visit, where he underscored the far-reaching impact of Nigerians and the diaspora on British society.
The President pointed to sports as a visible and influential bridge between both nations, noting that individuals of Nigerian heritage continue to excel at the highest levels across different disciplines. He also referenced Maro Itoje as another example of excellence, citing his accomplishments in rugby.
“Nigerians contribute enormously to the vitality of this nation,” Tinubu said, while also acknowledging the critical role Nigerian professionals play in sectors such as healthcare.
He noted that Nigerian doctors and nurses remain among the largest groups of international medical personnel within the UK’s health system.
Saka and Eze, both born in England to Nigerian parents, have risen to prominence in international football, becoming key figures for the English national team.
Joshua, widely celebrated for his achievements in boxing, has held multiple world heavyweight titles and remains a global sporting icon, while Itoje continues to shine as one of England’s most accomplished rugby players.
Tinubu further praised the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, describing it as one of the most vibrant communities globally, with notable contributions spanning business, culture, and public service.
He added that the Nigeria–UK relationship extends beyond shared history, stressing a mutual commitment to growth, resilience, and collaboration.
The President also reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to the Commonwealth of Nations, noting its role in deepening diplomatic and economic ties between both countries.
