The Super Eagles of Nigeria face seven-time African champions Egypt on Tuesday evening in a pre-AFCON friendly at the Cairo International Stadium, as both sides fine-tune preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Although the fixture has been stripped of full international status, it remains a valuable rehearsal between two continental heavyweights with a rich and competitive history.

Nigeria’s disrupted build-up
Nigeria’s preparations have been far from ideal. FIFA regulations permitted European clubs to retain African players longer than expected, disrupting the Super Eagles’ schedule and forcing the cancellation of a planned warm-up match.
As a result, this clash with Egypt could be Nigeria’s only outing before AFCON kicks off on Sunday, December 21.
Head coach Eric Chelle opened camp on Sunday, December 14, and has had just one full training session with his squad ahead of the game.
Several players are expected to arrive in Cairo only hours before kick-off, while others may not be risked at all. Despite these limitations, the fixture offers an opportunity to test tactical ideas, assess squad depth and gauge match readiness—particularly among new call-ups adapting to the technical crew’s philosophy.
Head-to-head record
Nigeria and Egypt have met 19 times, with the Super Eagles holding a slim edge: nine wins, five draws and five defeats.
Nigeria have also won the last two meetings by single-goal margins. Paul Onuachu scored the winner in a 2019 friendly, while Kelechi Iheanacho netted the decisive goal in a 1-0 group-stage victory at the 2021 AFCON. In recent years, the fixture has been notably cagey, with only one of the last ten encounters producing more than two goals.
Team news and selection
Chelle has named a 28-man AFCON squad comprising three goalkeepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders and nine forwards.
Goalkeepers Francis Uzoho and Stanley Nwabali are already in camp, with more Europe-based players due before Tuesday.
Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze and Calvin Bassey are among those expected in Cairo.
Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke arrive on the back of strong club form and are already with the squad.
Paul Onuachu and Wilfred Ndidi conclude club duties on Sunday night, while Zaidu Sanusi is expected to report on matchday following Porto’s Monday fixture. With limited preparation time, heavy rotation is likely.
Fringe players and recent invitees could be given opportunities, while Osimhen and several regulars may be rested to avoid unnecessary risk.
Egypt more settled
Egypt head into the match in a more stable position. Head coach Hossam Hassan has worked with his squad for several weeks and selected a balanced 28-man group.
Captain Mohamed Salah is available, supported by attacking options including Mostafa Mohamed, Mahmoud Trezeguet, Ahmed Sayed Zizo and Omar Marmoush.
Veteran goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy anchors a defence that has enjoyed continuity in recent outings.
This stability makes Egypt slight favourites and a potential confidence boost as they refine plans for a record-extending AFCON title push.
