Rivers United will return to Nigeria Premier Football League action on Sunday when they host Ikorodu City FC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, with the encounter marking their third match in just six days.
Rivers United have endured a demanding run of fixtures, taking on Ranchers Bees on Monday before travelling to face Katsina United on Wednesday. Sports247 understands that Sunday’s clash with Ikorodu City will be their third game in six days, putting their squad depth and fitness to another test. Despite the hectic schedule, the Pride of Rivers have maintained their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 NPFL campaign.
Their most recent outing ended in a 1-1 draw against Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. Samson Olasupo gave Rivers United the lead shortly after half-time before a deflected free-kick from former Rivers United midfielder Sani Mubarak restored parity for the hosts.
The result extended Rivers United’s unbeaten run to six matches, leaving them with three wins and three draws from their opening six games. They currently sit second on the NPFL table with 12 points, one point behind leaders Rangers.
However, the quick turnaround presents another test for Finidi George’s side, who will now have to manage fatigue while preparing for a home clash against an Ikorodu City team that also played on Wednesday.
Ikorodu City were held to a goalless draw by Sporting Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, leaving them with eight points from their first six league matches. They have recorded two wins, two draws and two defeats so far this season.
Sunday’s meeting therefore brings together two sides looking to strengthen their positions early in the campaign. Rivers United will be seeking to protect their unbeaten record, while Ikorodu City will aim to leave Port Harcourt with a positive result.
With both teams coming off midweek fixtures, squad rotation, fitness and efficiency could play important roles when the two sides meet.
Sports247 will continue to provide updates and coverage of the NPFL encounter as Rivers United take on Ikorodu City.
