National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade has welcomed the agreement among Nigeria Basketball Federation stakeholders on the federation’s electoral timetable, expressing optimism that the unity demonstrated can usher Nigerian basketball into a more stable era.
The NBBF Extraordinary Congress unanimously approved October 15, 2026, for its Elective Congress in Abuja, bringing greater clarity to a leadership transition that had generated considerable debate within the basketball community.
For Olopade, the significance extends beyond simply fixing an election date.
“This is a victory for Nigerian basketball,” the NSC Director-General said, praising stakeholders for putting aside disagreements and reaching common ground on the process.
The October 15 date is particularly important because it falls within the transition framework communicated by world governing body FIBA, which recognised the current Musa Kida-led board until that date and required the federation to conduct fresh elections within the stipulated window.
Ahead of the main congress, elections for technical representatives, players’ representatives and other affiliate bodies will take place in Abuja between October 7 and 14.
A seven-member electoral committee headed by Dr Lanre Glover has also been constituted, alongside a three-member Election Appeals Committee chaired by Barrister Emmanuel Okibe.
Olopade has consistently argued that Nigerian basketball cannot afford another damaging leadership battle.
Earlier this year, he urged stakeholders to accept FIBA’s position and end the divisions that have repeatedly surrounded the federation.
“This is a crucial moment for basketball in Nigeria. We must all put the game first,” Olopade said at the time. “The future of our athletes, our national teams, and our global reputation depends on collective responsibility and adherence to due process.”
With former D’Tigers star Ejike Ugboaja, basketball investor Mark Igoche and other interested stakeholders emerging around the leadership conversation, Olopade believes the quality of those seeking positions provides further reason for optimism.
For the NSC chief, however, the biggest achievement so far may be simpler: Nigerian basketball stakeholders disagreed, came together and found a common path to the ballot box.
