‘They Must Stay Focused!’ Elonu Warns D’Tigress Not to Relax Despite World Cup Ticket

Former D’Tigress star and FIBA Women’s Afrobasket 2021 Most Valuable Player Adaora Elonu has suggested that the current Nigerian team may feel slightly relaxed during the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament 2026, given that they have already secured their place at the World Cup.

Elonu offered insight into the mindset of the players, explaining that the pressure is somewhat different for the team compared to other countries still fighting for qualification.

According to her, Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup means the qualifiers may serve more as an opportunity to fine-tune strategies and build chemistry rather than a do-or-die situation.

“The team could afford to be a little relaxed,” Elonu noted.

However, she also warned that a relaxed approach could sometimes affect execution on the court if the players are not careful.

Elonu stressed that even though qualification is already secured, the games remain important for maintaining competitive intensity and preparing for tougher challenges ahead.

“It can sometimes affect how well the team executes,” she explained.

The former Nigerian star expressed confidence that head coach Rena Wakama will ensure the players remain focused throughout the competition.

Elonu said Wakama has demonstrated strong leadership qualities and understands how to keep the squad motivated regardless of the circumstances.

“I trust Coach Wakama to keep the team on their toes,” she said.

She added that the qualifiers provide a valuable platform for testing combinations, building chemistry among players, and identifying areas that need improvement.

Elonu concluded by urging the players to approach every game with professionalism and intensity, emphasizing that consistent performance will be crucial when the World Cup itself begins.
