‘They Know What They Lost’ Obafemi Says AFCON Is Super Eagles’ Chance to Win Nigerians Back

Former Nigeria international Abiodun Obafemi has said the Super Eagles are fully aware of what they lost by missing out on the FIFA World Cup and understand that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco represents their opportunity to reconnect with Nigerians.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Obafemi stressed that the players are mentally prepared and eager to get started, but warned that success will only come through total commitment.

“The players know what they lost by missing the World Cup. They understand what AFCON means now,” Obafemi said.

He explained that while the Super Eagles possess quality, African football, and global football in general, has become far more competitive, leaving no room for complacency.

“Football has changed. Africa is very competitive now. You cannot win games by reputation alone,” he added.

Obafemi emphasized that AFCON is not a tournament where teams can afford slow starts or half-hearted performances, insisting that every player must give maximum effort from the first match.

“Nothing less than 100 percent commitment will be enough. From the first game to the last, everyone must be ready to work,” he stated.

The former striker believes the disappointment of missing the World Cup has sharpened the players’ focus rather than broken their confidence.

“That setback should make them stronger mentally. This is their chance to make Nigerians happy again,” he said.

Obafemi also highlighted the importance of unity within the squad, noting that AFCON success often comes down to teamwork and sacrifice rather than individual brilliance.

“AFCON is won by teams that fight for each other. Talent is important, but unity and discipline are more important,” he explained.

He urged the coaching staff to ensure clarity in tactics and roles, saying confusion can quickly derail a team at a major tournament.

“Players must know exactly what is expected of them. That clarity helps confidence,” he noted.

Obafemi concluded by expressing confidence that the Super Eagles can deliver if they approach the tournament with the right mindset.

“I believe the team is ready. If they give everything, Nigerians will be proud of them again,” he said.
