TFF Probes Yanga Princess Striker Over Gender Eligibility Amid Controversy

The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has reportedly ordered Young Africans Women’s Football Club (Yanga Princess) to suspend their Rwandan striker, Jeanine Mukandayisenga, following allegations questioning her gender eligibility in the Tanzania Women’s Premier League.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the federation has written to the club instructing them not to field Mukandayisenga in any upcoming matches — including the Community Shield clash against JKT on October 9 — until a full investigation is concluded.

According to sources close to the matter, the probe stems from claims suggesting that the player possesses male genitalia, sparking widespread debate both within sporting circles and on social media. The reports also allege that some individuals have come forward claiming to have had intimate relations with the player, fueling speculation about her biological sex.

The TFF is said to be handling the matter with utmost confidentiality as it seeks medical and legal clarity in accordance with international sports regulations regarding gender verification.

The case has revived discussion on gender identity and hormonal differences in women’s sports — a complex and sensitive issue that has previously affected several high-profile African athletes. Notably, Zambia’s Babra Banda and South Africa’s Caster Semenya have faced scrutiny and restrictions over naturally elevated testosterone levels, which sports governing bodies argue can confer unfair advantages in female competitions.

Experts emphasize that such cases require careful consideration rooted in science, fairness, and human rights, rather than public speculation or emotional reactions.

As the investigation continues, Yanga Princess are expected to comply with TFF’s directive while the football fraternity awaits an official statement from the federation to clarify the facts and outline the next steps.
