Ayomide Folorunsho produced a remarkable display of resilience to overcome fellow Ayomide, Oduwaye, in a dramatic three-set encounter at the ongoing Igboya Tennis Tournament in Ikorodu, Lagos.
Sports247 reports that Folorunsho was forced to dig deep before eventually securing victory in a contest that went down to the wire, with the deciding match tiebreak providing a thrilling conclusion to an absorbing battle.
Oduwaye, representing the Rock Tennis Foundation in Abeokuta, Ogun State, made the brighter start and claimed the opening set 5-3. Folorunsho, however, refused to let the early setback dictate the outcome as he gradually found his rhythm and mounted a determined comeback.
The second set proved equally competitive, with neither player willing to surrender ground. Folorunsho eventually prevailed 5-4(5) in the tiebreak to level the match and force a final-set match tiebreak.
The deciding phase produced the most dramatic moments of the encounter.
Folorunsho established what appeared to be a commanding 9-4 advantage, putting himself within touching distance of completing the comeback. But Oduwaye, despite signs of fatigue, fought back strongly and refused to concede.
The Rock Tennis Foundation player’s late resistance extended the contest considerably, forcing Folorunsho to negotiate a series of match points before finally closing out the encounter.
Folorunsho eventually converted his eighth match point, winning the final-set match tiebreak 13-11 to complete a hard-earned comeback victory.
The result underlined the importance of composure and endurance in tennis, particularly in a contest where momentum shifted repeatedly between both players.
For Oduwaye, the defeat will be a difficult one to take after recovering from 9-4 down in the deciding tiebreak and pushing his opponent to the limit. His fighting spirit, however, remained evident throughout the encounter.
Folorunsho’s victory, meanwhile, showcased his ability to remain mentally focused under pressure and find a way through even when the match appeared to be slipping from his grasp.
With the Igboya Tennis Tournament continuing in Ikorodu, the thrilling encounter has provided another reminder of the growing competitive depth among emerging tennis players in the region.
