Mali produced a dramatic and resilient performance to defeat Tunisia on penalties in their AFCON 2025/26 Round of 16 clash, sealing a place in the quarterfinals after an extraordinary contest marked by adversity, late goals, and goalkeeping heroics.
The Eagles’ task became significantly harder early in the match when Woyo Coulibaly was sent off in the 26th minute for a dangerous challenge on Hannibal Mejbri, leaving Mali to play more than an hour with ten men. Tunisia attempted to capitalise on their numerical advantage, increasing pressure as the match wore on.

After sustained probing, the Carthage Eagles finally broke the deadlock in the 88th minute, when Firas Chaouat found the net to give Tunisia a late lead that appeared to have settled the tie.
However, Mali refused to be denied. Showing remarkable composure and belief, they pushed forward in stoppage time and were rewarded in the 96th minute, when Lassine Sinayoko converted a crucial penalty to restore parity and force the match into extra time.
After 1-1 draw after Extra time, the penalty shootout belonged to Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, who emerged as the hero of the night. Diarra made two decisive penalty saves, swinging momentum firmly in Mali’s favour and guiding his side to a memorable victory from the spot.
The triumph completes an unusual but impressive journey to the last eight for Mali, who drew all three of their group-stage matches and were also held in regulation time in the Round of 16 in addition to extra time journey, yet found a way to progress when it mattered most.
Mali’s reward is a quarter-final showdown against Senegal, setting up a mouthwatering West African clash. Tunisia, meanwhile, exits the tournament despite coming agonisingly close to progression.
Against the odds and down to ten men, Mali’s courage, discipline, and mental strength stood out, earning them deserved praise for one of the most dramatic performances of the knockout phase.
