Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has expressed confidence that Team Nigeria will add to its medal haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, following an impressive opening to the competition.
Nigeria has emerged as one of the standout African nations at the Games, with strong performances in para powerlifting and weightlifting helping the country climb to four gold and four silver medals as more events get underway. Athletics, wrestling and several other medal prospects are still to come, giving officials confidence that the tally will continue to rise.

Speaking on the team’s level of preparedness, Olopade said the athletes are motivated, focused and determined to justify the confidence reposed in them.
“We are confident there are more medals to come. The athletes are well prepared, highly motivated and eager to give their very best for Nigeria,” Olopade said.
The NSC Director General noted that the encouraging start is a reflection of months of planning, improved athlete welfare and strategic reforms introduced by the Commission ahead of the Games. He added that the performances recorded so far have validated the work done behind the scenes by coaches, administrators and support personnel.
“I must commend every member of the team who has worked tirelessly to make this possible. What we have achieved already is a victory for everyone who contributed to the preparations,” he added.
Olopade also expressed optimism ahead of the commencement of athletics, traditionally one of Nigeria’s strongest sports at the Commonwealth Games, where stars including world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprinter Kanyinsola Ajayi, quarter-miler Samuel Ogazi and several other medal hopefuls are expected to compete.
With Team Nigeria continuing to gather momentum in Glasgow, attention will now shift to the remaining events as the country’s athletes seek to build on their encouraging start and strengthen Nigeria’s position on the Commonwealth Games medal table.
