The team is led by captain Abdulqudus Olawale Aliu, alongside Prestige Archibong (AYSC U-19 champion), Sophia Ebube Ekeruche (U-15 winner), and Joy Eberechukwu Nwabuzor.
Nigeria will compete in two categories of the global championship, which has attracted participants from 21 countries and over 140 players.
Alongside Kenya and South Africa, Nigeria will fly Africa’s flag in the prestigious youth tournament.
Prior to departure, the players held a three-day training camp in Abuja, fine-tuning preparations for the challenge ahead. Captain Aliu, who featured at the last WYSC in Sri Lanka, expressed confidence that the team would surpass their previous performance.
“We are grateful to the Nigeria Scrabble Federation and the National Sports Commission for backing us. We will do our very best to put smiles on the faces of sport-loving Nigerians,” Aliu said.
President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Olobatoke Aka, commended the resilience of the players and appreciated the support of the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Honourable Bukola Olopade, in ensuring the team’s participation despite global economic challenges.
“These players have shown consistency, talent, and the ability to compete against the best in the world. They are prepared to conquer in Malaysia. They have the talent to make Nigeria proud; they just need the opportunity to show their strength,” Aka stated.
The 2025 World Youth Scrabble Championship runs from August 30 to September 1 in Kuala Lumpur.
