Team Nigeria Eyes More Gold As African School Games Reach Final Week

Team Nigeria is lighting up the African School Games in Annaba, Algeria, with an electrifying mix of speed, strength, and spirit. With 19 medals already in the bag — 4 gold, 7 silver, and 8 bronze — the young athletes are proving to be a dominant force as the competition enters its thrilling final week.

The spotlight now turns to the track and field arena at Chabou Stadium, where Nigeria’s athletics team is poised for a grand finish. Seven finals await the green-and-white contingent on Monday, August 4, with hopes high for a golden haul.

Leading the charge is Nigeria’s sprint sensation duo, Rosemary Nwankwo and Miracle Ezechukwu, who delivered a stunning 1-2 finish in the 100m final earlier in the Games. The pair are set to clash again in the 200m Girls Final, having clocked the fastest semifinal times — Ezechukwu at 24.02s and Nwankwo close behind at 24.26s. It’s a rematch that promises fireworks.

On the boys’ side, Faye Perfect lived up to his name in the 200m semis, blazing through the line in 21.75s. He will carry Nigeria’s hopes in the 200m Boys Final, aiming to add to the medal tally with another powerful run.

Middle-distance standout Teibowei Samson also made the cut and will contest the 800m Boys Final, determined to convert his smooth progression into podium glory.

Field events offer yet more medal opportunities for Nigeria. In the morning session, Ukandu Ugonna takes center stage in the Girls Discus Final, while Joseph Chimgozirim will launch for gold in the Javelin Boys Final. High jumper Mohammed Adeniyi rounds out Nigeria’s day of finals as he seeks top honors in the Boys High Jump Final.

Track events are set to ignite at 5:00 PM local time, with field competitions kicking off at 9:00 AM, all taking place at the buzzing Chabou Stadium.

With medals on the line and momentum on their side, Team Nigeria is not just competing — they’re commanding attention, and the final week in Annaba could see their star rise even higher.
