Tanzania’s marathon team is celebrating a historic period after Joseph Tiophil Panga claimed ninth place at the 2025 BMW Berlin Marathon, while Alphonce Felix Simbu made history by becoming the first Tanzanian to win a global marathon gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
In Berlin, Panga clocked 2:09:35 to finish ninth in a competitive field led by Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe, who won the race in 2:02:15. Despite warm conditions that forced several runners, including Tanzanian Gabriel Geay, out of the competition, Panga showed resilience and consistency to secure a coveted top-ten position in one of the world’s most prestigious marathon events.

Just a week earlier, Simbu stunned the athletics world in Tokyo by storming to victory in the men’s marathon at the 2025 World Championships. In one of the closest finishes in championship marathon history, Simbu edged past Germany’s Amanal Petros by only 0.03 seconds as both men were timed at 2:09:48. Italy’s Iliass Aouani secured bronze in the dramatic race.
Simbu’s victory is a landmark achievement for Tanzania, delivering the country’s first-ever gold medal at a global athletics event. Known for his endurance and late surges, the 33-year-old had previously won bronze at the 2017 World Championships and silver at the 2025 Boston Marathon, but his Tokyo triumph elevated him to national hero status.
For Tanzania, the combination of Panga’s strong Berlin showing and Simbu’s historic gold medal underlines the nation’s growing influence on the global marathon stage. With the East African nation already producing a wave of world-class long-distance runners, these results are seen as a turning point that could inspire a new generation of athletes.
As the international marathon season continues, Tanzanians will be watching closely to see how their champions build on these achievements, with hopes that the country’s athletics success story is only just beginning.
